SCHOOL COUNSELING WITH NANA-YAA ADU

My Story

Hello!
My name is Nana-Yaa Adu, and I am your MYP School Counselor for the 2025–2026 school year! I am truly excited to continue working with students and families this year and to support every child in having a successful and meaningful school experience.
A little about me: I began my post-secondary career at Illinois State University, graduating in December 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, specializing in Physiology, Neuroscience, and Behavior. After graduation, I worked as a teacher’s aide at the Allendale Association and later as a teacher’s assistant at the Alexander Leigh Center for Autism. These experiences deepened my passion for education and supporting young people.
In 2018, I began graduate school at DePaul University, where I trained to become a professional school counselor. During my final year, I interned at James K. Wadsworth Elementary School near Hyde Park, and in June 2021, I earned my Master’s in Counseling.
Since then, I have had the privilege of working as a school counselor with students from preschool through 8th grade. Over the past few years, my work has focused on supporting students’ academic growth, social-emotional learning, and overall well-being. I have led small groups, facilitated classroom lessons, coached students on goal setting, and supported school-wide initiatives such as building student leadership and developing safe, inclusive spaces.
As I step into the 2025–2026 school year, I look forward to partnering with you to ensure that our students feel supported, encouraged, and ready to thrive both in and out of the classroom!
I am first generation Ghanaian-American. My parents immigrated from Ghana in their mid to late twenties, specifically from Koforidua and Bechem. I am a person who runs on creativity and humor. I always try to find the funny in a situation while also being supportive and attentive.

Please if you run into me in the hall way or a school event don't be afraid to say hi!
